As a candidate, you are responsible for familiarizing yourself with the election and campaign finance requirements that apply to your campaign, which you may obtain from either the Wisconsin Statutes or from your private attorney. In addition, you may obtain general information about elections from the Wisconsin Elections Commission. Information you receive from the County Clerk's Office may not be interpreted as legal advice or a release from your responsibility to comply with the law

Candidate Deadlines for 2024 General Election

Deadlines for a special election for County Executive will be provided when the special election is called

First day for candidates to circulate nomination papers for the 2024 General Election Monday, April 15, 2024
Deadline for incumbents not seeking re-election to file Notification of Noncandidacy Friday, May 24, 2024 by 5:00 p.m.
Deadline for fall candidates to file nomination papers, declarations of candidacy, and campaign registration statements Monday, June 3, 2024 by 5:00 p.m.
Deadline for county candidates to file Statement of Economic Interest Monday, June 17, 2024 by 4:00 p.m.

 

Filing Requirements for Dane County Constitutional Office

Offices

The following offices are up for election on November 5, 2024

  • Clerk
  • Register of Deeds
  • Treasurer

Eligibility

Candidates for County Constitutional Office must meet the following eligibility requirements.

  • 18 Years of Age
  • Elector/Resident of Dane County

Requirements

  1. Completion of Campaign Finance Registration Statement – Form CF-1
    Filed when candidacy is publicly announced and/or when expending/receiving funds for candidacy.
  2. Completion of Declaration of Candidacy - Form EL-162
  3. Completion of Nomination Papers - EL 168
    Collect between 500 and 1,000 signatures between April 15, 2024 and June 3, 2024
  4. Statement of Economic Interest
    Must be filed within 2 weeks of filing deadline, or by June 17, 2024

The deadline for filing the Campaign Registration Statement, Declaration of Candidacy and Nomination Papers is

Filing Requirements for Dane County Executive

Eligibility

Candidates for County Executive must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • 18 Years of Age
  • Elector/Resident of Dane County

Requirements

  1. Completion of Campaign Registration Statement - Form CF-1

    The CF-1 is filed when candidacy is publicly announced and/or when receiving or expending funds for candidacy.

  2. Completion of Declaration of Candidacy – Form EL-162
  3. Completion of Nomination Papers – EL-169

    Collect 500 (minimum) to 1000 (maximum) signatures from Dane County electors between December 1, 2020 and January 5, 2021.

  4. Completion of Statement of Economic Interest

    Must be filed within 2 weeks of filing deadline, or by January 19, 2021.

Filing Requirements for Multi-Jurisdictional Municipal Judge

Eligibility

Candidates for Multi-Jurisdictional Municipal Judge must meet the following eligibility requirements.

  • 18 Years of Age
  • Elector/Resident of one of the municipalities in that judicial jurisdiction.

Requirements

  1. Completion of Campaign Registration Statement – Form CF-1
    File when Candidacy publicly announced or when expending/receiving funds for candidacy.
  2. Completion of Declaration of Candidacy – Form EL-162
  3. Completion of Nomination Papers – EL-169
    Collect 20 (minimum) to 100 (maximum) signatures
    Signatures of qualified electors (at least 18 years old and a U.S. citizen) may only be collected between December 1, 2023 and January 2, 2024. The deadline for filing the papers is January 2, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. Only electors who live in the municipalities in the multi-jurisdictional district are allowed to sign the nomination papers.

    Signers must give their complete address (house number, street and municipality – no Post Office boxes), and must list the municipality of residence (city, village or township). Signers must date their signature, including the year.

    The circulator does not have to reside in the district. Circulators are only required to be qualified electors. The circulator must certify the nomination papers after obtaining the signatures. Signatures dated after the date listed by the circulator will not be counted. Signatures with addresses not in your district will not be counted. You may determine whether an address is in your district by checking https://myvote.wi.gov/.
  4. Completion of Statement of Economic Interest – Form ETHFR-904 SEI
    To be filed with the Wisconsin Ethics Commission, 101 East Wilson Street, Room 127, P.O. Box 7125, Madison, WI 53703. The deadline for the Statement of Economic Interests is Friday, January 5, 2024 at 4:30 pm.

Filing Requirements for Dane County Board of Supervisors

County Supervisor District 7 Vacancy

County Board Supervisor District 7 is vacant and will be filled by an appointment by County Board Chair Patrick Miles. To be considered for appointment, applicants must submit the following by Wednesday, May 1, 2024 at 4:00 pm:

Eligibility

Candidates for County Board Supervisor must meet the following eligibility requirements.

  • 18 Years of Age
  • Elector/Resident of the Supervisor District you are seeking to represent

Requirements

  1. Completion of Campaign Registration Statement – Form CF-1

    The CF-1 is filed when candidacy is publicly announced and/or when receiving or expending funds for candidacy.

  2. Completion of Declaration of Candidacy – Form EL-162
  3. Completion of Nomination Papers – EL-169
    Collect 50 (minimum) to 200 (maximum) signatures

    Signatures of qualified electors (at least 18 years old and a U.S. citizen) may only be collected between December 1, 2023 and January 2, 2024. The deadline for filing the papers is January 2, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. Only electors who live in the supervisory district are allowed to sign the nomination papers.

    Signers must give their complete address (house number, street, and municipality – no Post Office boxes), and must list the municipality of residence (city, village or township). Signers must date their signature, including the year.

  4. Completion of Statement of Economic Interest

    Must be filed within 2 weeks of the filing deadline (January 16, 2024). Section VIII should contain your signature which must be witnessed (not notarized), the date you signed, your legibly printed name, and title (County Board Supervisor Candidate District #). Please read the instruction sheet for help in filling out the form.

Notification of Non-Candidacy

Incumbents who are not running for their seat are asked to please submit the Notification of Non-Candidacy form to the County Clerk’s Office no later than 5:00 p.m. on the 2nd Friday preceding the deadline for filing ballot access paperwork.

Upcoming Deadlines:

  • Friday, May 24, 2024 is the deadline for incumbents not running in the 2024 General Election to submit the form to the Clerk's Office.
